Greektown is a historic shopping and entertainment area in downtown Detroit, Michigan. It is on Monroe Avenue between Brush and St. Antoine streets, just northeast of the city’s center. It has a station with that name on the Detroit People Mover, the city’s elevated downtown transit system. The Renaissance Center, Comerica Park, and Ford Field are all close to Greektown.

The area is named after the early 20th century Greek immigrants who lived there, and there are still restaurants with a Greek theme. Within its boundaries are the St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, the Second Baptist Church, the Atheneum Suite Hotel, and the modern Hollywood Casino at Greektown, which used to be called TRAPPER’S ALLEY. In 1982, the National Register of Historic Places put the area on its list. In March, the Greek community parade is often held in this neighborhood.

In the 1830s, German immigrants moved into the area that is now called Greektown. They built a mostly residential neighborhood there. But at the start of the 20th century, most of the German people who had been living in the city for a while moved out of the neighborhood and into newer areas farther from the city center. As soon as they moved out, a new group of Greek immigrants moved into these older homes. Theodore Gerasimos was the first Greek person who was known to have moved to Detroit. As soon as they got there, the new Greeks set up their own businesses in the area.

As of June 2012, Greektown only has three full-fledged Greek restaurants left. The area is a popular place to eat and have fun, with many restaurants that serve authentic Greek food and the Hollywood Casino at Greektown, one of the city’s three casinos. Some of the buildings on Monroe Street have designs inspired by the mythical horse Pegasus, ancient Greek buildings like the Parthenon, and other old buildings. On Monroe Street, Greek music is played all day long. The New Parthenon, The Golden Fleece, Bakaliko Cafe, Cyprus Taverna, Pegasus Taverna, Pizza Papalis, and Fishbone’s Rhythm Kitchen Cafe are all well-known restaurants. There is a stop for the Detroit People Mover at the Hollywood Casino, which is on Beaubien Street between Monroe Street and Lafayette Boulevard.
