About Redford Mi
Redford is a charter township in the U.S. state of Michigan. Its full name is the Charter Township of Redford. The city of Detroit is on the east side of the township. At the 2020 census, there were 49,504 people living there.
On April 12, 1827, a state legislative act set up and mapped out Springwells Township and Bucklin Township. Because postal rules say that no two post offices can have the same name, when a township was split up, different names had to be found. Bucklin lost its name when it was split into Nankin Township (the west half) and Pekin Township (the east half) on October 29, 1829, along what is now Inkster Road. The names came about because there was a lot of interest in China at the time. Pekin was changed to Redford in March 1833, and the southern half of the town became Dearborn Township on April 1. Native people and colonial Europeans crossed the River Rouge where it runs through Redford. This is how the town got its name. “Rouge” means “red” in French.
Redford Township is a suburb of Detroit that is to the west. The United States Census Bureau says that the land area of the township is 11.2 square miles.
