West Village is an old neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. It is roughly bounded by Jefferson, Kercheval, Parker, and Seyburn Avenues. The Islandview neighborhood is next door to the west, and the Indian Village neighborhood is next door to the east. In the middle of the 20th century, the district got its name from the fact that it was just west of the better-known Indian Village Historic District. The National Register of Historic Places put it on its list in 1980.
West Village is mostly a residential area with 275 single-family and two-family homes, 30 apartment buildings, and about 20 businesses spread out over 20 square blocks. The grid of the neighborhood isn’t even, and there are a lot of service alleys and short, narrow cross streets. All of the buildings are set back from the street, and there are a lot of different architectural styles, like Tudor, Colonial Revival, and Mediterranean Revival houses, as well as Georgian Revival and Jacobean apartment buildings.
At the turn of the 20th century, the areas next to Jefferson Avenue were some of the most expensive places to live in Detroit. When the area that is now West Village was mapped out around that time, restrictions on cost, use, setback, and height of buildings made sure that this area would also be popular. Between 1905 and 1925, the neighborhood quickly filled up with homes, apartment buildings, and row houses for people in the upper middle class. Franz C. Kuhn, Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, Edwin C. Denby, Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Hinchman, president of the architectural firm Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls, and Julius Melchers, a sculptor, all lived in the neighborhood. After World War II, the neighborhood went downhill because of racial tensions, redlining, and white people leaving the city for the suburbs. But in the 1970s, when Indian Village came back to life nearby, people became interested in the neighborhood again. A neighborhood group called the West Village Association was started in 1974.
